One of my previous careers, at the same time as I was quilting and running my own website, was as a web designer.

I am an avid fan of Lynda.com online training library

Are you trying to learn how to use your latest software programme and can't figure out the finer details?

Lynda.com has thousands of videos to watch and I always find something new to learn about.

Lynda Weinman, co-founder of Lynda.com, wrote "Designing Web Graphics", published in 1996. This book was one of the first web design books I owned, and is well thumbed.

What is Lynda.com?

A personal website? Vanity site?

Quote from Lynda.com website:

Our mission

To help you learn the skills you need to achieve your full potential.

How would I have managed?

Without Lynda's book?

In the early days of the Internet, I had the first quilting website in Australia, and had to learn as I went. Browsers were clunky and almost no pictures, because they took too long to load, so web design was largely about text design.

I scoured the bookshops which specialised in computer books — very few and far between.

Then I found Lynda's book, and tried out everything she offered inside. That was the start of my love affair with web design.

The book has been rewritten to encompass the many new features of web pages, and web design, making it a must-have for budding web designers.

designing web graphics.4 (4th Edition) (Voices That Matter)
Product Description The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up.

What do you want to learn about today?

My go to website for learning web topics is Lynda[dot]com.

Whenever I need to find out what is current best practice, or what are the latest techniques involving web pages, I turn to the video training.

Lately I have been playing with updating my WordPress blog, because I need to update a friend's website, also in WordPress, produced several years ago and now not stylish for today's web.

There are presently 58 courses, with 1412 videos about WordPress, and the skill level is from beginner to advanced users.

Treat yourself to a trial of some of the courses. Free!

You will not be sorry.

Video training vs Reading manuals - What's your take?

Do you prefer to read a book and go at your own pace to learn?

Or do you like to see things happen to learn new software?

Video training or book workshops?

I have no connection with Lynda[dot]com, other than as a very happy (and knowledgeable) learner
